Application

Tips: What is Working Principle of Split-type Ultrasonic Level Sensor?

The split-type ultrasonic level sensor operates on the time-of-flight (TOF) principle, which measures the time taken for an ultrasonic pulse to travel from the transducer to the material surface and back. The sensor’s probe, typically mounted at the top of the tank or vessel, emits high-frequency sound waves. These waves travel through the air or gas above the material until they hit the surface and are reflected back to the probe.

The level sensor’s electronics precisely calculate the round-trip time of the ultrasonic pulse. Using the known speed of sound under current environmental conditions, the distance to the material surface is determined by the formula: Distance = (Speed of Sound × Time of Flight) / 2. This calculated distance is then converted into a level value based on the installation height of the probe.

A key feature of modern ultrasonic liquid level sensor is automatic temperature compensation. Since the speed of sound varies with temperature, an integrated temperature sensor adjusts the sound velocity value in real time to ensure measurement accuracy. This compensation is especially important in applications with significant temperature fluctuations.

The split-type design separates the transducer from the signal processing and display unit. This allows the ultrasonic level sensorprobe to be installed in harsh or confined environments—often with high IP ratings for dust and water resistance—while the electronics enclosure can be placed in a more accessible location for configuration and maintenance. Communication is typically facilitated via analog 4–20 mA outputs or digital interfaces such as RS485 with Modbus protocol, enabling integration into industrial control and monitoring systems.
